A RAGS TO RICHES TO RAGS STORY
That wild and crazy guy Steve Martin, makes his film debut in this wild and crazy comedy hit The Jerk. Steve portrays Navin Johnson, adopted son of poor black sharecropper family, whose crazy inventions lead him from rags to riches and right back to rags. Along the way, he's smitten with a lady motorcycle racer, survives a series of screwball attacks by deranged killer, becomes a millionaire by inventing the "Opti-grab" handle for eyeglasses--and shows why he's the hottest comic performer in America today.

"Okay, It was never easy for me. I was born a poor black child. I remember the days, sitting on the porch with my family, singing and dancing, down in Mississippi."
Thus begins the tale of Navin Johnson, a poor young man destined for greater things in the world. We watch this man as he goes on to those greater things and then back down to the rags from whence he came,and we laugh our asses off all the way!

Steve Martin's Best - 3.5 out of 5 (10/29/1998)
This is a great movie. The DVD is not ideal, though, because it is pan and scan ONLY. That's really sad. There are the standard features (trailer, bios) and the picture is sharp. C'mon, studios, let's stop with the P&S comedies. Original aspect ratio rules!
